The rustic Rockingham Church, formerly known as St. Leonard’s Anglican Church, sits on a hill overlooking the hamlet of Rockingham, on the old Peterson Branch colonization road. A unique heritage building (c.1875) with Ontario Heritage designation, the church is notable for its round-headed windows, warm interior paneling and curved wooden pews. The surrounding gravestones mark the lives of early settlers, including John S.J. Watson, Rockingham’s founder and an early Warden of Renfrew County.

In the mid-1990s a group of volunteers formed to save the church from demolition and oversee extensive repairs. The Friends of the Rockingham Church continue to raise funds to maintain the church and promote interest in its place in the history of the area.

The Renfrew County Museums Network (RCMN) was formed in 2002 so that all of the county museums in operation at that time could both share technical information and collectively promote their facilities. Representatives have met regularly since then at our various member museums. Currently (April 2018) our membership stands at twenty-one mostly seasonal museums plus eight Heritage Tourism partners (including three archives), with the potential for further expansion.

At the museums and partners sites throughout Renfrew County we celebrate the many stories that have shaped our history. To read some Ottawa Valley stories, click here or visit ottawavalleyculture.ca

Large scale paintings by professional mural artists are displayed throughout downtown core. These over-size canvases illustrate historic scenes and themes such as the arrival of Samuel de Champlain, logging in the Ottawa Valley, and the installation of commercial electric street lighting in 1884. As Pembroke developed from a pioneer settlement to a small city, the landscape and lifestyle changed. The Pembroke Heritage Murals are an illustrated record of these changing panoramas. Since the first five murals were painted in 1990, Pembroke Heritage Murals has overseen the creation of more than thirty murals by both local and national artists. Their styles are as varied as the wealth of historical source material they've researched and been influenced by. During the summer, you are likely to see murals in progress and perhaps talk to the artists about their work.

The Barry’s Bay Genealogy Group was formed in 2002 to help families find their roots. The meetings are very informal with each of us bringing our stumbling blocks to other members in hopes of getting an idea on how to proceed. Genealogy is like a puzzle and there is always one piece missing. Our meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month (Jan-Nov) at 7:00 pm at the Madawaska Valley Public Library in Barry’s Bay. New members are always welcome.

OUR PROJECTS

The Barry’s Bay Genealogy Group can start you on tracing your family history in the area. Our members’ research has revealed many unique, fascinating stories that now form the Barry’s Bay Heritage Walk. For details please see the Heritage Walk website.  Ask at the Barry’s Bay Railway Station for maps of the self-guided Heritage Walk or book a guided tour in the summer.

Representatives have met regularly since then at the various member museums. Fourteen years later, membership stands at twenty-two mostly seasonal museums plus seven Heritage Tourism partners, with the potential for further expansion.

At the museums and heritage partners sites throughout Renfrew County we celebrate the stories that have shaped the history of our area. To read more Ottawa Valley stories, visit ottawavalleyculture.ca

The property was originally a 200-acre land grant offered by the Government of Canada to Europeans willing to immigrate to Renfrew County in the mid-1800s. Wilhelm Hoch, who was born in Prussia, and his wife Amelia, born in Sebastopol, Renfrew County, bought the land in 1904. Hoch started a dairy farm and eventually used his herd to start a creamery in Killaloe, from where he shipped to Eganville, Pembroke, and then to Ottawa. The first floor represents a farmhouse from the period of the 1910s and 1920s, with a summer kitchen, traditional kitchen, dining room and parlour. The second floor houses the bedrooms.

Fossil hunters revel in the Bonnechere landscape: the Ordovician Fossil Capital of Canada. Displays reveal the transformation from life in the 1700’s to the present capturing influences ranging from square timber, to lumber and pulp, along with waters shifting their use as original transportation routes to recreational get-away destinations and electrical generation. John Egan, founder, timber maker and politician, is a central figure. Visitors experience the Bonnechere Valley, its rural lifestyle and natural wilderness. Artisans, artists and performers – all are represented and weave the fabric of life along the Bonnechere. The museum has an access ramp and washrooms.

Also, take a walk on the Geo-Heritage Trail. Here, you will see an exhibit of rock types and their special features on a fossil rich limestone outlier. You can view a century old quarry and maybe even some turtles sunning themselves on logs, or explore the mysterious connecting trench. As you travel beautiful, forested paths, watch for other local wildlife. Visit our website for Tour times and dates, or take a self-directed tour. Make sure to stop at the museum for a map and a guide-chart.

New this year is a Rhubarb Fest on June 28 from 11:30-1:00. You can enjoy some fresh rhubarb pie or torte, or take home a rhubarb bakery item (muffins, cake, pie).

Also, on July 30 at 7:00, author and professor, David Wilson, will be providing a talk on D'Arcy McGee, Father of Confederation and outspoken opponent of Fenianism, whose assassination is the greatest murder mystery in Canadian political history. Did the court convict and hang the wrong man? Tickets are available for this event at the Museum for $15.

Most early pioneers lived within a three-mile radius of the village as it exists today, but some settled as far away as the Deep River and Wylie districts. The School House Museum explores mysteries and misconceptions about the town, such as its origins and how it got its name. Many believe, for example, that Chalk River owes its existence to the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. While the railroad did contribute to the area development, farmers and lumbermen who relied on the Ottawa River for transportation had settled in the region long before the railroad was built. Using digital technology, the School House Museum opens a window on all these aspects of Chalk Rivers history.

These people are members of the Algonquin of Pikwakanagan Band of the Golden Lake First Nation Reserve, who follow in the footsteps of countless other Algonquin canoe builders before them. This exhibit focuses on the stretch of river called the Little Bonnechere, which flows southeast from the Algonquin Dome to Round Lake. Along these shores Aboriginal peoples hunted, fished and trapped, lumbermen felled trees, and immigrant settlers cleared farms. Over time, each group left its mark on the landscape. At Basin Depot, most recently an abandoned logging settlement on the Little Bonnechere, archaeologists have unearthed the bits and pieces that characterize a community. Their discovery proves that while Basin Depot may have been isolated, its residents lived lives similar to those in other communities, large and small, all across Canada. Much of this rich legacy of collected artifacts is being shared for the first time through this virtual museum. Welcome to the Land of the Spirits, an open door to life along the Bonnechere.

Catherine Doherty, foundress of the Madonna House lay apostolate, opened the Madonna House Pioneer Museum in 1967 after seeing a need to collect and preserve items that were vital to the lives of local pioneers. The displays of old tools, cobbler and farm implements, kitchenware and the hundreds of authentic artifacts from pioneer homes and farms, speak with pride of our ancestors’ way of life. Built from hundred-year-old hand-hewn logs by experts in the Madawaska Valley, even the building itself is a colourful illustration of our rich pioneer heritage. Every item is the gift of a generous benefactor interested in preserving the history of the area.
